The colorful "Suitcase" Sam Angel entered the Las Vegas limelight in 1950s. Little is known of his life before then, other than he served in World War II. Sam Angel was hired as a driver by Nick "The Greek" Dandalos, a legendary high-roller, which gave Sam his entry into the world of high-stakes poker. Angel began to gain his reputation as a poker player by the 1960s. And as his reputation grew, he began to sit in on some of the town's biggest games. His gained most of his fame from playing razz. During the course of his razz career, he made four finals tables and won two WSOP Gold Bracelets. He also enjoyed playing no-limit Texas holdem and deuce-to seven lowball. He played against the likes of Texas gamblers Johnny Moss, Crandell Addington, and Doyle Brunson. In fact, 1967 Angel sat in one of the first high-stakes Texas Holdem Poker Games ever played in Vegas. That first game was held at the Golden Nugget, but when it migrated to the Dune, the poker star moved with it. Unfortunately, Sam couldn't keep the pace up forever. In the end, three problems brought him to his knees. He was an alcoholic, starting each day at 12pm with a stiff drink. This put his health in danger. Sams downfall can be attributed to three things. He was an alcoholic who began drinking at noon. Even after his doctor warned him drinking would kill him, he could not resist down Heinekens and Seagrams V.O. Canadian Whiskey. And, when he drank, he had a bad temper. The charismatic salesman was loved by many, but his temper also made him many enemies. His fame as a legitimate, wealthy jewelry salesman indirectly became his third downfall. He once estimated he had been robbed over 130 times in his life. Those thefts and his extravagant lifestyle attributed to the slow decline of his assets. As his wealth diminished, so did his poker playing. For Angel, if he could not play High-Stakes Poker, he did not want to play poker at all. This small man, standing little more than five feet tall, had a huge personality. He left an unmistakable market on the history of poker and the city of Las Vegas. Labels: High-Stakes Poker, Texas Holdem Poker, WSOP Gold Bracelets

If you missed it in the early part of May 09', Vanessa Rousso broke her own NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship record. In a spectacular event, she ousted Randy Dorfman and seventy-seven other players to bring home a modest $720,000. Once the field was trimmed from 77 players to just 8, the real action began. Places like Germany, Australia, the USA, Sweden, England, and Lithuania were all represented at the final table. However, once the finals had begun, it didn't take long for players to get eliminated. In fact, we saw the first player out when it took Dorfman only eight hands to take out David Steicke from Australia. Next to fall was David Eldar (Australia), followed closely by William Thorson (Sweden). By this time, Dorfman, who had started the day in third place, was in the chip lead with 1.2 million, and Rousso, who had started the day in the lead, had dropped to the bottom with 810,000. Rousso and Florian Langmann (Germany) continued to lose until this Poker Champion was down to 600,000. Rousso pushed all in on the next hand and Langmann called. With sevens and treys, she eliminated the German.nd then there were only three-Vanessa Rousso, Randy Dorfman, and Tony G. At this point the order was Dorfman, Rousso, and Tony G. regarding their chip count. While Rousso only trailed by $350,000, Tony G. was down over a million in Poker Chips. As the two fought for a place to play Rousso, it was clear how much the loser was going to make. The 2nd and 3rd place finishers would each receive $420,000. However, only one of them would be able to go heads-up against Vanessa for the championship. When the Heads-Up match began it was pretty even with Dorfman and Ruosso only separated by $600,000 in chips. However, it didn't take long for Rousso to turn the tables and gain a large chip advantage. Dorfman came out with an odd bluff, which allowed Vanessa to double down. After this happened, Dorfman looked deflated and poor decisions cost him when he check-raised all in and ended up losing. Down to his final $300,000 chips, Dorfman fought for about a half hour before Ruosso closed the doors on her USA opponent holding a straight to Randy's two pair. In the end, the finals took nearly 11 hours to complete. Although there was a lot of disappointment throughout the day, the final 8 couldn't be disappointed with their earnings: 1. Vanessa Rousso (USA) -- $720,000 2. Randy Dorfman (USA) -- $420,000 3. Tony G (Lithuania) -- $420,000 4. Florian Langmann (Germany) -- $188,000 5. David Eldar (Australia) -- $138,000 6. William Thorson (Sweden) -- $99,000 7. Andrew Feldman (England) -- $79,000 8. David Steicke (Australia) -- $60,000 For a $25,000 buy-in, the ROI at any position would look great to everyone who cashed at the NBC National Heads-up Poker Championship. The online gaming industry is being hit particularly hard with these indictments, which also includes the indictments of the famous e-Wallet NETeller’s founders John Leferbvre and Stephen Lawrence who are under investigation in conjunction with Anurag Dikshit of Party Gaming. Anurag Dikshit of Party Gaming is expected to reach a plea agreement in which a settlement will be set up to settle the companies ability to find help with consolidation negotiations and allow other firms to assume control. Playing Cards are manufactured in two different materials i.e. Paper and Plastic Paper Playing Cards. Paper cards are the cards most people use growing up. They are cheap, easy to find, and most people are accustomed to their texture, thickness, and flexibility. Paper Cards are usually made of one to three ply of card covered in a varnish. Though the coating protects the cards, but it is not able to withstand everything. The coating is lost slowly as cards are shuffled and handled. Eventually the coating becomes too thin for the cards and they need to be replaced as the cards are too difficult to comfortably handle. After all the cards are made of paper ply, so it cannot stand up to liquids as well. Spilling a drink on a card will most likely ruin the card. Additionally, they are not washable, so dirt or other material cannot be removed easily from the cards. Paper cards also lack flexibility. Card can easily get creases, or marks, can be moulded easily. Due to this, the cards are spoiled easily and on few use, serious players often want a new fresh deck to play with. Keeping the cards packed for long period also spoils them. Plastic Playing Cards Plastic Playing Cards are made from different material and as the name says, they do not suffer from the same drawbacks as paper cards has. First of all, they are very slick and the slickness does not wear away in the same manner as it does on paper cards. They will shuffle and slide easily for tournament after cash game after tournament. Plastic cards are incredibly flexible and will snap back to form after bending. This makes them more crease and mark resistant. Plastic cards can also be washed. If they become soiled in any way, soap and water will clean them, not ruin them. Of course that means they stand up to wet picnic tables and spilled ice teas as well. This helps keep them tidy and make the players feel pleasant to play with. Many plastic cards do not have a texture or feel that resembles paper cards. Often they are too slippery for less than nimble hands to shuffle. They can also feel flimsy when compared to paper cards. Since many people are accustomed to the feel of paper cards, they are uncomfortable handling plastic cards and would prefer to replace decks more frequently than to make the switch. The truth is that because plastic cards last so much longer than paper ones, they are a much cheaper option per play than paper cards. It is just a matter of a switch and put it into practise to use plastic cards. As in all things, there is give and take in deciding which type of Playing Cards is best for you. Purchasing a deck of premium plastic cards is more of a commitment because they cost more and last longer. Paper cards are for many a comfortable short-term solution. Keep Stacking Chips,

2008 has been a great year for Online Poker Rooms and Poker News. The game continues its popularity both online and in live Poker Rooms across the country. More and more people are winning entries into prestigious live events via online satellites making the prize pools shatter past records. Last year also saw record-breaking Online Poker Events actually being conducted online. Just about every major Poker Site has there own online championships that are creating prize funds that rival the World Series of Poker. One site in particular came up with the idea of mimicking the World Series of Poker with tournament's that had an entry fee of only 1% of their counterparts. This championship met with unrivaled success. The winner of the Main Event cashed for almost $500,000! Online Poker Players continued their success but in a different venue. As more and more people qualify online they try and take their skills from the computer to a real live table. Touching felt for the first time can be an intimidating process and most Online Poker Players usually falter since most don't understand the Rules For Poker Games. That was not the case in 2008 as a high percentage of all major tournament's that were won were done so by people that primarily made their living at online poker. Of course, the most prestigious event in all of poker is still the World Series of Poker. What was once an event that took merely days is now a month and a half long marathon. This year's World Series of Poker had an unbelievable 55 events. It was marked by multiple $10,000 Championship Events, the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Event and of course the $10,000 World Championship Main Event. The winner of the event, Peter Eastgate, became the youngest person ever to win the Main event. He obviously understands the Basic Rules of Poker and could teach anyone How to Play Poker. For his efforts he brought home over $9 million and shattered Phil Hellmuth as he was the previous record holder and helt that title more dear than any other. As we are in late December, the 2008 poker games are just about over. Now it's time to look forward to 2009. Everywhere you look, new and different types of poker torments are popping up. The WPT, the EPT and of course the World Series are still the premier events in poker. However, there are now more ways than ever to become an instant millionaire. The World Series of Poker has spawned the Circuit Tour, which is actually the model that many of these other poker tour's grew from. All of these Poker Tournaments are generally televised and run over the course of the year culminating in a Championship Event and all follow the Basic Rules of Poker. While winning the championship in one of these smaller does not compete with winning a bracelet and the World Series, they are getting closer each and every day. The new year is sure to bring in many new millionaires in poker. What was once a fantasy can now become reality quicker than ever. It merely takes skill, patience, luck and of course the poker gods need to be looking out for you on that day. Pretty much any time you turn on your TV you can watch a major tournament or high stakes poker game. The ability to do so has made common knowledge of the skills needed to win a major tournament. Professional Poker Players are finding it harder and harder to compete in these events as unheard of players show up on the scene and constantly take them down. While the 2008 Poker Games were a crazy ride, it will only become more insane in 2009 as the poker world gets turned on its ear and more and more people take up his wonderful game. __________________________________________ Visit Brian Garvin and Jeff West's Website and check out our Casino Poker Chips and learn more about Poker Chips from Poker Stars Direct. Poker Camps are nothing new. Several Online Poker Sites and many Poker Pro’s are involved in helping new and old Poker Players alike to raise the level of their tournament play. While they have been doing this, a small fact seems to have been ignored, you need CASH to enter a tournament and that is usually earned the old fashioned way, grinding it out on the felt. Anyone who plays a significant amount of poker knows that tournament play and cash play are two different animals. Well that problem is about to get solved as the WSOP Academy is introducing their Cash Game Academy in 2009. The WSOP Cash Game Academy is going about doing it the right way. From WSOP Poker Hats, WSOP Poker Videos, WSOP Bracelets and WSOP Cards they will have it all. They are not using second rate journeymen to teach these classes, they are going for the giants in the game. Names like Annie Duke, Phil Hellmuth, Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem will be amongst the instructors. You will also be privy of the knowledge of Cash Game Monsters like Mark Seif and Paul Wasicka. Wecan only hope that these classes are successful and the likes of Sammy Farha and Kid Poker begin taking part. Brandon Rose, Vice President of Post Oak Productions who handles the WSOP Academy Operations, stated that he was worried that the image of the WSOP would not be readily associated with the cash game market. However, he also thought that the market was too big to ignore and lucky for all of us, he moved forward with this venture. The first of two academies will take place on January 24th and 25th at Harrah’s in Atlantic City. Mark Seif, Paul Wasicka and Alex Outhred will be among the leading instructors. The next session will be held in the beginning of February in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. Each session will consist of both lectures and simulated live cash play. The conclusion of each academy will be a cash game competition where the attendees will fight it out for the right to earn a spot in Las Vegas for the WSOP Academy Tournament of Champions. The cost of the academy is $1,899. While the price may initially sound a little steep, the money that can be saved by applying the techniques should return your investment in no time at all. For their money, the players will be able to see and discuss actual situations and have them broken down as they occur. This is much better than any book as you are going to be able to get deep inside the heads of the pro’s and truly understand why they do what they do. All in all, the WSOP Cash Game Academy will be a WSOP Main Event and welcome addition to the wonderful world of Poker Schools. In actuality, this may actually be the best of any of them as the bulk of the coverage players see on television is tournament related. Most of those techniques will get you buried in a real life cash game and players need to understand that. These academies will go a long way to educated players in how to properly play when the chips actually represent a real amount versus a "represented dollar amount". _____________________________________________ Visit Brian Garvin and Jeff West's Website and check out our Casino Poker Chips and learn more about Poker Chips from Poker Stars Direct. Here's some Poker News you'll want to hear. We have all heard the stories of twentysomethings taking down Poker Yournament after Poker Tournament and taking control of the "New Age of Poker" and Brent Edwards, 23, continued these Poker Variations of his with a huge win at the AC Circuit Tour Event at Harrah’s. For his $5,150 entry fee, he cashed his largest payday ever, $280,040 and also locked up a seat in the 2009 World Series of Poker. He worked his way through a field totaling 179 Poker Players, including several highly ranked Poker Professionals. As with many of these boy wonders, Roberts only started playing 4 years ago. While still too young to play in the casino’s, he honed and perfected his game over the next couple of years and then hit the pro world of poker in a wild storm. While he still considers cash game his main form of income, he will be stepping out into several tournaments over the next year. The idea of a huge payday and world travel are just too much to pass up for a young man on top of the world. Roberts has mastered the art of How to Play Poker and the Basic Rules of Poker by assimilating his play towards his opponents and this tournament was no different. While he was back and forth, he relied on his ability of playing extremely aggressive to win. His aggression was the major factor but luck also played its normal role in this win. Early on in the tournament, he had to rely on a couple of suckouts to survive but then took full advantage of his good fortune. As he pretty much stayed among the average chip stacks for the bulk of the first 2 days, he made his Online Poker Room move late in day two and then never looked back. He went to the final table as the chip leader and was always within an arms length of the top spot when he eventually took it down. Once the tournament was narrowed down to three players, it did not take long for Edwards to use his stack to push everyone around and take down the coveted ring. Within an hour of McLaughlin being taken out by Kyle Bowker, Phillip Reed returned the favor and took him out with a hand of 53c when the board hit all clubs. Bowker managed to flop top pair and assumed he was good when Phillip pushed all in and he made the call for his tournament life. He was obviously wrong and now Reed and Roberts, both in their early 20’s, were heads up for the title. After a quick break, Roberts made quick work of the heads up battle. First Blood was drawn with Reed limping in and a flop coming out of 8d2d5c. Reed led out with a 30,000 bet and Roberts immediately came over top of him making it 90,000 to go. Reed made the call to see a 9d hit the turn. Both players checked it and a JD came out on the river. After taking a few moments, Roberts put out a bet of 240,000 and was called by Reed. Roberts took the hand down with a flush and then had almost a 2-1 chip lead over Reed. Shortly after Reed was taken out when Roberts flopped top two and Reed was all in trying to hit an inside straight. His search was futile and Roberts walked away with the event. We are surely going to hear more from the latest phenomenon as he is sure to be a force in the tournament world. I'm sure Brent can school us on plenty of Poker Tips. ______________________________________________________ Visit Brian Garvin and Jeff West's Website and check out our Casino Poker Chips and learn more about Poker Chips from Poker Stars Direct. It is no secret that Online Poker has taken the world by storm. Going back as little as 10 years ago, the only event that was generally watched by the public was the World Series of Poker. Online Poker Rooms have changed all that. Now you can literally get in to this $10,000 tournament without ever putting up a penny out of your own pocket. With the success of Online Poker came the arrival of new events that were just as prestigious. Online poker sites would have been fools not to take advantage of this. One site in particular, Poker Stars, launch their own European Poker Tour which is a huge success. The moment Chris Moneymaker showed the winning cards wearing a Poker Stars hat, the groundwork was laid for the Poker Stars European Poker Tour. The Poker Stars European Poker Tour was launched in 2004 and is one of the hottest Poker Sites. It consisted of seven events and while starting off rather slowly, immediately picked up steam. With the conclusion of the championship event in Monte Carlo, it became apparent that this tour was here to stay. The winner of the final event, Rob Hollink, walked away with over 635,000 British pounds. I bet Rob could show all of us a few Hot Poker Tips. The tour rolled into season two to much acclaim. Over the seven events, there was an additional 541 entries into the Poker Tournament's, even for people just learning How to Play Poker and learning the Rules For Poker Games. This resulted in higher prize pools getting the tour even more attention than it was already receiving. Additionally, more and more players were gaining entries via online satellite tournament's. Poker Stars was becoming more popular by the day. In 2006 the Poker Stars European Poker Tour expanded to eight events. This season is the season that took the tour to the next level. At times during season one, they struggled to get 200 entries. During season three all but one tournament had well over 300 participants and half of the events received over 400 entries all following Official Poker Rules. This season concluded with the Grand Finale on March 28 through April 2 as Gavin Griffin took down a monster first-place prize of 1,825,010 British pounds. The tour grew to 11 events in season four. This marked the first time that they eclipsed 1000 entries for single tournament. 650 players qualified online out of the 1136 entries. The winner of the Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure won a cool $2 million as the overall prize pool was just over $8.5 million. During the season, over 5900 people played in the EPT with almost 20% of them having qualified online. That is over 1500 people winning their way into events costing as much as 10,000 British pounds for little or no money. The possibility of getting into one of these events by playing in a freeroll or inexpensive satellite tournament has made both the site and the tour what it is today. The Poker Stars European Poker Tour is now in its fifth season consistently following the basic Rules For Poker Games. Four of the six winners so far were online qualifiers. Four out of the six tournaments produced over 500 entries creating larger pots than ever before. This tour continues to grow in popularity and with the success of Poker Stars is sure to be around for a long time. These events carried the same prestige of any great poker tournament and are regarded as some of the toughest to win. One thing is for sure however, you win one of these tournaments and you are all but guaranteed to become a millionaire! _____________________________________________ Visit Brian Garvin and Jeff West's Website and check out our Casino Poker Chips and learn more about Poker Chips from Poker Stars Direct.
