Everyone dreams of the situation of finishing first coming from playing Poker With the Stars and taking down that big payday. What would possibly make you decide to split the pot with two other people? It’s simple mathematics. If you are in that situation, you virtually assure yourself of second place money. Nothing is guaranteed, you are always only one hand away from going from the penthouse to the rail and when tens of thousands of dollars are at stake for a normal working Joe, the Poker Stars Main Event not seem like such a bad idea.
That exact scenario around during the Poker Stars Sunday Million and a deal was reached with only 3 players left. While Poker Stars has a rule that a certain percentage of first place must be put aside for the eventual winner, each Celebrity Poker Stars Player is guaranteed that they would walk away with over $120,000. Not a bad day at the office.
The final table started with 4 players holding over 10,000,000 in chips. The first casualty was AvelonSalheb as he pushed in the BB for his 5,461,281 in chips with a suited AJ. CHI01 (Mike Chiappetta) threw out a little more than half of his stack to make the call and got very lucky when the board ran out a straight for him. That hand put him up over 15,000,000 in chips and in position to make a huge run for the win. 9th place paid $10,568.40 8th place was decided when Mighty Horse looked down at 89o and was quickly called by TommyE79 and his A8h.
Neither player improved and after Mighty Horse collected his $17,362.70, there were 7 left. 5fish was next to fall as he pushed from the SB with KQs and was called by the eventual winner opis/sp and the infamous 102 hand known as The Brunson. While 5fish flopped an open ended straight, it never filled and the pair of 10’s ended up being good enough to send him to the rail to collect $26,421.50
The next level saw two more players fell and with their only being 4 players left alive, tensions were rising as the prize money was becoming quite significant. The next player to go out was guaranteed almost $70,000! The hand that decided the outcome was as spectacular as the payday. jdballer40 threw out an initial raise to 2,400,000 and Poss came right over top of him to make it 8,800,000. It was folded back to jdballer40 immediately pushed all in and was called. Poss unfortunately had what we all fear, KK to AA and Poss went to the rail to get his money.
Some initial chatter took place when it was finally down to three people but the players could not come to a reasonable deal. The problem seemed to be that they had one short stack that one of the players did not want to pay off. He soon doubled up and then the talks resumed and a deal was struck for each player to be guaranteed $122,006.84 and an additional $30,000 going to the outright winner, opis/sp.
The final hand was actually decided on a bluff as Chiapetta made a move with 35d and opis/sp was sitting with QJc and sitting strong with middle pair. As you can see, while it is sometimes difficult to in essence turn your back on that pre-determined first place prize, you never know what the cards are going to hold and you are often better off locking up that guaranteed payday. What a great place to master How to Play Super Stars Poker.
The only time it will not pay you to do this is if you have a significant chip lead. If that is the case, try to get a weighted split or refuse it all together. If there comes a time when the stacks are little more even, then you can start talking about a split again. In this case, it was a good decision all around.
