It is no secret that Online Poker has taken the world by storm. Going back as little as 10 years ago, the only event that was generally watched by the public was the World Series of Poker. Online Poker Rooms have changed all that. Now you can literally get in to this $10,000 tournament without ever putting up a penny out of your own pocket. With the success of Online Poker came the arrival of new events that were just as prestigious.
Online poker sites would have been fools not to take advantage of this. One site in particular, Poker Stars, launch their own European Poker Tour which is a huge success. The moment Chris Moneymaker showed the winning cards wearing a Poker Stars hat, the groundwork was laid for the Poker Stars European Poker Tour.
The Poker Stars European Poker Tour was launched in 2004 and is one of the hottest Poker Sites. It consisted of seven events and while starting off rather slowly, immediately picked up steam. With the conclusion of the championship event in Monte Carlo, it became apparent that this tour was here to stay. The winner of the final event, Rob Hollink, walked away with over 635,000 British pounds. I bet Rob could show all of us a few Hot Poker Tips.
The tour rolled into season two to much acclaim. Over the seven events, there was an additional 541 entries into the Poker Tournament's, even for people just learning How to Play Poker and learning the Rules For Poker Games.
This resulted in higher prize pools getting the tour even more attention than it was already receiving. Additionally, more and more players were gaining entries via online satellite tournament's. Poker Stars was becoming more popular by the day.
In 2006 the Poker Stars European Poker Tour expanded to eight events. This season is the season that took the tour to the next level. At times during season one, they struggled to get 200 entries.
During season three all but one tournament had well over 300 participants and half of the events received over 400 entries all following Official Poker Rules. This season concluded with the Grand Finale on March 28 through April 2 as Gavin Griffin took down a monster first-place prize of 1,825,010 British pounds.
The tour grew to 11 events in season four. This marked the first time that they eclipsed 1000 entries for single tournament. 650 players qualified online out of the 1136 entries. The winner of the Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure won a cool $2 million as the overall prize pool was just over $8.5 million. During the season, over 5900 people played in the EPT with almost 20% of them having qualified online.
That is over 1500 people winning their way into events costing as much as 10,000 British pounds for little or no money. The possibility of getting into one of these events by playing in a freeroll or inexpensive satellite tournament has made both the site and the tour what it is today.
The Poker Stars European Poker Tour is now in its fifth season consistently following the basic Rules For Poker Games. Four of the six winners so far were online qualifiers. Four out of the six tournaments produced over 500 entries creating larger pots than ever before.
This tour continues to grow in popularity and with the success of Poker Stars is sure to be around for a long time. These events carried the same prestige of any great poker tournament and are regarded as some of the toughest to win. One thing is for sure however, you win one of these tournaments and you are all but guaranteed to become a millionaire!
